The Argosy Book Shop featured in Vertigo is based on the real-life San Francisco book shop The Argonaut.
Robert Haines, Sr., the owner of the time, says Hitchcock visited his store, and had his team photograph the entire store, including the wood cabnets and mezzanine, which both are prominate on the Argosy set. Today, the Argonaut is run by Robert Haines, Jr and resides at 786 Sutter St.
